The Watch House
This existing property sits on the edge of a scenic coastal path in Northern Ireland and got its name from its 18th century history as a coast guard lookout building for smuggling activities at sea. It has long since been converted to a residential property, but required significant alteration and extension for the family who acquired it. The design approach was to ensure there was a clear distinction between new and existing, with the addition being clad in burnt larch and set back from the existing cottage with a glazed link. The connecting space forms a double height dining area with a bridge between the two building elements. The key views from the house are reserved for the primary living and sleeping accommodation.
