YMCA Community Hub & Pool

The Greenhill YMCA site nestles in the foot of the Mourne mountains providing accommodation and outdoor activities for up to 200 visitors at a time. The campus lacked facilities for communal meeting / conference / indoor activity space so a brief was developed for a building that would provide this with a community focus as an additional local asset. Water safety training is an important aspect of their work with young people, so this aspect was added to the project as an important local resource. This resulted in a small pool facility used to train in everything from swimming classes for toddlers and on-to-one disabled to swimming canoe rolling and water rescue techniques. The project makes most of its stunning location and views across Newcastle bay with large glazed screens and uses a simple and cost effective cladding material most often used in agricultural buildings.
